Imagine a world where children may encounter obstacles—how could they not?—but never have the profound shock of feeling as if they are fundamentally unloved, or unworthy of love. Growing up, most of us in fact encountered a world in which every shock and every trauma became a datum upon which we constructed various levels of neurotic relationship to life, precisely due to poor impression food about love. Spiritual practice, in a very real and important sense, consists of a set of responses to this situation: a way to find love in a universe in which we experienced a fundamental absence of that love at some point, because the adults around us had parents themselves who missed the mark. Of course people make mistakes, and they make mistakes with children, as they do with others—that is a given. But Conscious Parenting can provide tools so that we do not put children in the position of questioning the existence of love in their lives. And by doing so, we demonstrate to ourselves the loving embrace that seemed absent in our own early situations. Join us for a conversation about an exciting new project from the Many Rivers community to create a Festival of Conscious Parenting in which practitioners of various spiritual traditions share their wisdom and experience about the ways to bring intention and attention to the critical needs of our children.

Rob Schmidt, Ph.D., and Stuart Goodnick received apprentice and master-level training in the alchemical transformation of human consciousness from Tayu Meditation Center founder Robert Daniel Ennis. Tayu owns and operates Many Rivers Books & Tea.
