Finding Home (Away From Home)
Leza Lowitz, author of Here Comes the Sun, Up From the Sea, Sacred Sanskrit Words, Yoga Heart, Yoga Poems, and more
Original Date: Friday, March 18, 2016
Physicist Michio Kaku says we're moving into a Type 1 Civilization of globalism and tolerance. But as we move toward a more unified world, we might find ourselves becoming more fractured. How can we find home wherever we are? In this talk, author Leza Lowitz will discuss the possibility that home can be more than a physical location, and that "family" transcends the nuclear unit. Touching upon her journey to create a family in Japan against great odds, she'll talk about finding a home abroad and creating a home for others. Her memoir, Here Comes The Sun, charts her quest across two decades, two continents, and two thousand yoga poses. She'll talk about Up from the Sea, her YA novel about the March 11, 2011 Japan tsunami. Based on the stories of survivors she met in the disaster zone, it's about a boy's journey to New York to meet survivors of 9/11 and how they helped him make a home within himself when the only home he'd ever known was destroyed. She'll also offer a meditation to help us be more at home in ourselves wherever we are in the world.
Leza Lowitz is the author of Here Comes the Sun, Up From the Sea, Sacred Sanskrit Words, Yoga Heart, Yoga Poems, Designing With Kanji, Other Side River: Free Verse, and more. Originally from the Bay Area, she lives in Japan with her family.
