The Mystical Positivist is a radio show and blog dedicated to the application of reason in the pursuit of spiritual practice and development. The attitude of Mystical Positivism holds that rationality is in no way the antithesis of deep mystical experience, but is in fact a necessary tool in pursuit of mystical experience. This perspective is intended to be controversial, in that it presents a challenge to the attitudes of those who adhere to an overly romantic picture of spiritual transformation that ignores the gritty substrate underlying spiritual pursuits. Recently the show’s thesis has been tested in the intimate bodily experience of Stuart Goodnick, the founder of this project, as he survived emergency surgery in rural Italy to remove a section of strangulated and herniated small intestine. This experience has created an opportunity for contemplation upon the nature and meaning of transfiguration of the organism. Join us for an examination of how reason can shed light upon, and serve the process of physical and mystical transfiguration.

Stuart Goodnick received apprentice and master-level training in the alchemical transformation of human consciousness from Tayu Meditation Center founder Robert Daniel Ennis, and has been a Tayu teacher since 1993. Tayu Center is an esoteric spiritual school with roots in several traditions, but founder Robert Ennis crafted an original and cohesive set of everyday esoteric practices applicable to the conditions of life in the twenty-first century. Tayu owns and operates Many Rivers Books & Tea. Stuart is an executive in a software company based outside the U.S., studies shakuhachi (bamboo flute) with master teacher Masayuki Koga, and hosts the Mystical Positivist radio show on KOWS-fm.
