Treeplanter on the moonscape of Mount St. Helens, logger in Alaska's boreal forest, hunter, fisherman, monk in long retreat,—Jampa Dorje, aka Richard Denner, has produced a series of chapbooks that tell of his outdoor adventures. In these gems—Deep Bay: or, Encounters in the Woods; An Ontological Circumambulation of Walden Pond; Forest for the Trees; Stream and Field; A Meditation on Higher Freedoms,—Jampa asks "What is wilderness? Is the wilderness without or within? What and for whom is the wilderness for? Wilderness or wildness?" as he backs his jeep over his newly-blued Winchester, plays out the role of an old man of the sea, or meditates on peaceful and wrathful deities in the Colorado Rockies.
RICHARD DENNER, aka Jampa Dorje, born 1941 in Santa Clara, California, was a Berkeley street poet in the 1960s. Living in a wilderness cabin, in Alaska, he began printing chapbooks on a hand press with worn fonts of type; there are now over 300 titles in the D Press backlists. Working cowboy on a cattle ranch, tree planter on the slopes of Mount Saint Helens after the blast, longtime proprietor of Four Winds Bookstore and Caf� in Ellensburg, Washington, Jampa completed a traditional solitary, three-year retreat in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. This wandering poet-printer-yogi now studies at Central Washington University.
