In this latest book, prolific author and psychotherapist David Richo illuminates how we replay the past in our present-day relationships—and how we can free ourselves from this destructive pattern. When the Past Is Present helps us become better aware of the ways that we slip into patterns from the past, so that we can identify our emotional baggage and take steps to heal it. Moreover, as Richo explains how childhood wounds become exposed in adult relationships, he further reveals how and why this process is a gift. As we recognize how strong attractions and aversions to people in the present can signal our own unfinished emotional business, we can use mindfulness to stay in the present moment and cultivate authentic intimacy.

David Richo, Ph.D., M.F.T., teacher, workshop leader, and writer, works as a psychotherapist in Santa Barbara and San Francisco California. He combines Jungian, transpersonal, and mythic perspectives in his work. He is the author of many books, prominently including How to be an Adult in Relationships, The Five Things We Cannot Change, The Power of Coincidence, Everyday Commitments, and The Shadow Dance.
