Charles Darwin's impact on how we comprehend the universe and the place of humanity in it has been enormous. The view of evolution by natural selection has touched virtually every arena of human endeavor, not least including religion. Some have regarded evolution as a profound threat, while others have welcomed it as a view of existence possessing great beauty and meaning. On this 200th Anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth, join us for an open discussion on how Darwin's ideas have shaped religion, politics, art and science in the 150 years since the publication of On the Origin of Species.
Jim Wilson and Rob Schmidt co-founded Many Rivers Books & Tea. They bring together religious, aesthetic, and scientific sensibilities from many angles. Jim is a poet, and a former Buddhist monk who has joked about the idea of creating a "Church of Darwin." Rob received a Ph.D. in anthropological archaeology from UC Berkeley, but describes himself primarily as a Tayu meditation teacher.
