Being steadfast and flexible, standing strong with a warm heart seems especially difficult in our world of wars, hatreds, and a degrading environment. Perhaps all eras seem difficult; certainly all lives have deep sorrows. Meeting suffering and finding equanimity, with wisdom and love: this is the aim of the Buddha Dharma and the point of Zen. Ah, but can we find in this Way a direction and succor for our own eager and wrinkled lives? This discussion will be grounded in the recently released volume by Katagiri Roshi entitled Each Moment Is the Universe.

Jisho Warner is a Zen Buddhist priest and teacher. She is the head of Sonoma County's Stone Creek Zen Center, and is a past president of the national Soto Zen Buddhist Association. Jisho trained in the US and Japan, and was a longtime student of Dainin Katagiri Roshi, author of Each Moment Is the Universe. Ken Sawyer is a Zen Buddhist priest who began practicing Zen under Shunryu Suzuki Roshi and Katagiri Roshi at San Francisco Zen Center in 1969, where he was later ordained and did his training. He moved to Sonoma County in 1989 and started a construction business. Ken and his wife Elizabeth Sawyer lead a sitting group in Occidental, Back Porch Zendo.
